Meteora Dress Code and Opening Hours
Can women wear trousers at Meteora? The monastery dress code, each monastery's hours and closing day in summer and winter, entry fees, and the best month to go.
Women cannot wear trousers into the Meteora monasteries: a skirt that reaches the knee or below is required, and shoulders must be covered. Men need long trousers and sleeves. Each of the six monasteries also has a weekly closing day (Varlaam and St. Nicholas Anapafsas both close on Fridays), more in winter, and all six are open on Saturdays and Sundays. The details are below, checked October 2026.
The dress code
| Women | Men | |
|---|---|---|
| Wear | A skirt or dress to the knee or longer; covered shoulders (short sleeves are fine) | Long trousers; a shirt with sleeves |
| Not accepted | Trousers of any kind, shorts, sleeveless tops | Shorts, sleeveless shirts |
Several monasteries keep wrap skirts at the entrance to lend to women in trousers, but they run short when the tour coaches arrive. The simple fix is a long skirt or a wrap in your bag that you tie over trousers at the gate. A light scarf covers bare shoulders.
The rule applies to every visitor, including those on tours, and it is checked at each gate.

Timetables from visitmeteora.travel and the MapTrotting guide (April 2026), checked October 2026; the sources differ by up to an hour on some hours, so read the notice at the gate. Hours change around religious holidays, so confirm locally before a holiday visit. All six monasteries are open on Saturdays and Sundays. Thursday in winter is the thinnest day, with Great Meteoron, Varlaam and Holy Trinity all closed.
Entry fees
Entry is about €5 per person at each monastery (some charge €3), cash only, paid at its own gate (checked October 2026). There is no combined ticket and no card payment, so bring small notes. Tour prices do not include these fees.
Do you need a guide?
No. The monasteries are open to anyone, and a road links them. What a guide adds is the order of visits around the closing days, the history of the monks who built on the rocks, and transport, since without a car you depend on taxis or the local bus from Kalambaka.
From Athens, the day trips take care of all of it. Meteora Thrones' 9 AM day visits three monasteries inside (two from November to March, when it adds a sunset stop), shows all six from the viewpoints and stops at the hermit caves. It costs from $97 per person, rated 4.7 from 6,359 reviews (checked October 2026), before the monastery fees.

The best month to visit
April to June and September to October. The weather is mild, the full summer hours apply, and the valleys are green in spring. July and August are hot and crowded. From November to March the hours are shorter and some monasteries close two or three days a week, so a day trip enters two instead of three, but there are far fewer visitors, and the winter sunset over the rocks is the reason some people choose it.
What not to wear elsewhere in Greece
Outside monasteries and churches, Greece has no dress code. Covered shoulders and knees are expected in any Orthodox church, and beachwear stays at the beach. For Delphi and the other ancient sites, the only rule is shoes with grip: the stone paths are steep and polished. If your trip takes in both Delphi and Meteora, the Delphi or Meteora guide and the two-day tour page help you plan which comes when.
