Is a Day Trip to Delphi Worth It?
Six hours on the road for three at the site. Who a Delphi day trip from Athens is worth it for, who should skip it, and how to get the most from the day.
Yes, for most people who came to Greece partly for ancient Greece. Delphi is the most complete ancient sanctuary you can reach from Athens in a day, and its setting is the best of any of them. The honest cost is time: about six hours on the road for roughly three at the site and museum. If that trade sounds wrong to you, it probably is, and there are better uses of the day.
What you get for the six hours
Three things, and they are hard to find together anywhere else near Athens.
The setting. Delphi is built on a ledge under the Phaedriades, the two great cliffs of Mount Parnassus, above a valley of olive trees that runs down to the Gulf of Corinth. The ancient Greeks put the centre of their world here, marked by the omphalos stone. Even with no interest in archaeology, the view from the theatre is worth the climb.
A whole sanctuary, not a single temple. You walk up the Sacred Way past the treasuries the Greek cities built to show off their gifts, to the Temple of Apollo where the Pythia gave the oracle, then the theatre and, at the top, the stadium of the Pythian Games. It is a hillside town of monuments, and you can read its layout as you climb.
The museum. The bronze Charioteer, the Naxian Sphinx on its column, the carved frieze of the Siphnian Treasury and the marble Antinous are among the best things in any Greek museum outside Athens. One ticket covers both the site and the museum.
Who should skip it
- If you have only two or three days in Athens. The Acropolis, its museum and the city itself will fill them, and a day on a coach is a day not spent there.
- If ruins leave you cold. Delphi without the history is a beautiful hillside and a long drive. Meteora, with its monasteries on rock pillars, is the better spectacle and needs no background.
- If heat or steep ground is a problem. The site climbs steeply on polished stone with little shade. In July and August the middle of the day is hard work, and that is exactly when the tours are there.
How much time you need
About three hours for the site and museum together. The guided tours give roughly an hour and three quarters at the site and an hour in the museum, which covers the main monuments with a guide. The stadium, at the top, is the part most people miss. One recent reviewer had to hurry to reach it and still make the museum on time, and another, on a two-day tour, chose the stadium and had no time left for the museum. If you want both at an easy pace, you need more than a tour gives you, which means a car or a night in Delphi.
The best way to do it in a day
For a first visit, a guided tour with the tickets option is the best way to spend a single day. The guide turns a field of stones into a place, the coach removes the driving, and the tickets option takes care of the midday queue. The question is what size of group you want.
The large-coach days from Athens cost least and carry the most reviews. A small group is the better experience at Delphi: you hear the guide on the narrow Sacred Way, and you move faster through the museum. Getaways Greece's small-group day picks you up from your hotel in central Athens by minivan, gives you a guided walk of the site and lunch time in the village before the return, about nine hours in all. The €20 ticket for the site and museum is not included, so you buy it yourself.
It costs from $101 per person, rated 4.7 from 407 reviews (checked October 2026). The Delphi entry ticket is not included.

If cost matters more than comfort
The cheapest guided days start from $29 per person in current promotion (usually $58) (checked October 2026) for the Key Tours day on the homepage, without tickets, which is where most people start. It is a large coach and a long day, but it has a live guide inside the site and museum and the most reviews of any Delphi trip. A virtual-reality audio-guided day costs about the same and replaces the guide at the site with a headset that shows the buildings as they stood.
How to make it worth it
- Read one page about the oracle before you go. The site rewards a little context more than most. Our what to see at Delphi guide is a good start.
- Decide on the stadium or the museum if you are short of time, and tell yourself which before you arrive.
- Go in spring or autumn if you can. The opening hours guide has the winter and summer hours and the free days.
- Consider Meteora too, but on a different day. The Delphi or Meteora guide compares them.
