How a Delphi Day Trip from Athens Works
Most of the day is road. Four things decide whether the hours at the site go smoothly.
Choose With or Without Tickets
The lowest price on most Delphi listings is the option without entry. The site and museum share one ticket, sold at the gate or online for a timed slot; the with-tickets option buys it for you and saves the queue at midday, when every coach from Athens arrives at once.
Be at the Meeting Point Early
Key Tours does not collect from hotels on this tour: you meet the coach at its departure point in central Athens. Leave time for the metro, because the coach leaves on schedule and Delphi is about three hours away.
Walk Uphill, Then the Museum
The sanctuary climbs a steep hillside on uneven stone: the Sacred Way, the Temple of Apollo, the theatre above it. Wear shoes with grip and carry water. The museum, with the Charioteer and the Naxian Sphinx, is flat and air-conditioned.
Lunch in Arachova, Back by Evening
The day ends in Arachova, a stone village on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, for lunch and a walk before the drive back. Lunch is included only on the options that say so; the coach is back in Athens in the evening, around ten hours after it left.

Delphi, Above the Pleistos Valley

The Guide
Delphi from Athens in One Day, Explained Properly
What the day involves, what the cheapest prices leave out, how long you really get at the site, and which tour suits whom.
Delphi sits on a ledge under the cliffs of Mount Parnassus, about 180 km north-west of Athens by road. In antiquity it was the seat of the most famous oracle in the Greek world, and the sanctuary of Apollo still climbs the hillside in terraces: the Sacred Way lined with treasuries, the Temple of Apollo, the theatre above it and the stadium at the top. Below the road, the museum holds what was found here, including the bronze Charioteer.
It is the classic day trip from Athens, and it works well as one. The catch is distance. A day trip is about ten hours, and close to six of them are on the road.

How the day runs
The tour at the top of this page is Key Tours’ guided day, and its timings are typical. The coach leaves its office on Athanasiou Diakou, in central Athens, in the morning; there is no hotel pickup, so you make your own way there. About two hours later it stops for 15 minutes in Livadeia, then climbs for another 45 minutes to Delphi. You get about 105 minutes at the archaeological site with the guide, then an hour in the museum. The last stop is Arachova, a stone village on the slopes of Parnassus, for an hour and a half of lunch and a walk, and then it is three hours back.
The price starts from $29 per person in current promotion (usually $58), rated 4.7 from 6,150 reviews (checked October 2026), with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Check dates for the Delphi day
That lowest price is the option without entry tickets, and this is the single most important thing to know before booking any Delphi tour. The site and museum share one ticket, €20 full price or €10 reduced (Hellenic Ministry of Culture, checked October 2026). Most tours sell a with-tickets option. If you take the one without, you buy your ticket at tickets.hh.gr for the hour the tour tells you to, so you enter with the group.
How much time you really get
Three hours sounds like a lot until you are on the hillside. The sanctuary is steep, the stone is polished smooth, and there is little shade. The guide’s walk goes up the Sacred Way to the Temple of Apollo and the theatre. The stadium is a further climb above that, and one recent reviewer had to hurry to see it and still reach the museum on time.
So decide before you go what matters to you. If it is the stadium, walk up while the group is still at the temple. If it is the museum, stay with the group: the Charioteer, the Naxian Sphinx and the frieze from the Siphnian Treasury are the reason the hour is there.
Across the road and a short walk east is the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, with the round Tholos that appears on most photographs of Delphi. Not every tour goes there. If seeing it up close matters, check the itinerary, or visit on your own.
When to go
The site is open all year. From 1 November to 31 March it opens 08:30 to 15:30, with last entry at 15:10; from 1 April it opens 08:00 to 20:00, closing earlier through September and October (Ministry of Culture, checked October 2026). It closes on a few holidays, including 1 January, Orthodox Easter Sunday and 25 December. The opening hours and tickets guide has the full list, the free Sundays and who enters free.
Spring and autumn are the best months: the olive valley below is green, and the hillside is not yet the heat trap it becomes in July and August. Winter has the shortest hours but the fewest people, and snow on Parnassus behind the ruins. Whatever the season, the tour coaches all arrive around midday, so a car and an early start is the only way to have the temple to yourself.
Should you do it yourself?
You can. The KTEL Fokidas bus leaves the Liosion Street terminal in Athens a few times a day and takes about three hours; there is no railway to Delphi. A car takes about two and a half hours, by the motorway north and then the mountain road through Arachova. Doing it yourself gives you the early morning, the Tholos, the Castalian Spring and time in the museum, but no one explains what you are looking at, and the bus timetable leaves a short day. The getting there guide compares bus, car and tour.

- Want a licensed guide all day? TAG Athens' Delphi day keeps a licensed guide with you inside the site and the museum, from $40 per person in current promotion (usually $66), rated 4.8 from 2,629 reviews.
- Want more than Delphi? Papillon's day to Delphi, the Corycian Cave and Thermopylae takes at most eight guests, adds the cave high on Parnassus and the battlefield of the 300, and leaves you to explore Delphi with a guidebook.
- Thinking of Meteora instead? The Meteora day trip from Athens is longer, about 14 hours, and the Delphi or Meteora guide compares the two. With two days, the Delphi and Meteora tour does both with a night in Kalambaka.
- Seeing the Acropolis too? athens-acropolis-tickets.com covers the timed Acropolis tickets and the tours that include them.

What Travellers Say
"what I liked the most was the explanations of the guide. She was very knowledgeable, very friendly, and she gave us very good recommendations. What I like the least was that we had to run in archeological Park of Delphi in order to see everything (I.e. the stadium) and arrive in time at the museum."
"Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and really engaging. The journey was long worth it! Highly recommend"
"Caterina was a very friendly guide who helped us learn a lot in a lighthearted way. All the times were adhered to – excellent service!"
"Delphi is a really nice place. A must see! Marita was a great guide, sharing a lot of interesting facts and tips. Really knowledgeable and friendly. You can go to the tavern even if you didn't pay the lunch with your trip (can definitely recommend you the wild boar)"
"We really enjoyed it. The guide made Greek history come to life. The wealth of information and myths was super interesting."
"Our tour guide Michael was amazing. He was so well versed in the topic of Delphi and vowe this amazing story about the history and significance of the sacred site. I booked the tour as a side thought but I was so pleasantly surprised by the tour, the sights and especially about our tour guide."
"The tour was very nice, and the guide provided excellent service. The only thing was that I booked the tour in Spanish, and they sent us to the English group."

Delphi Day Trip from Athens: Questions People Ask
The questions people type into Google before they book, answered in the first sentence.
Yes, and most visitors do it that way. Delphi is about 180 km north-west of Athens by road, roughly two and a half hours by car and about three by coach or KTEL bus. A guided day trip leaves central Athens in the morning, gives you around three hours at the site and museum, usually stops in Arachova, and is back in the evening, about ten hours in all. The calendar on this page shows the dates for the most-reviewed one.
It is easy, but it is a long day either way. On your own you can drive (the motorway north, then the mountain road through Livadeia and Arachova) or take the KTEL Fokidas bus from the Liosion Street terminal, about three hours each way. The bus leaves a short day at the site, so check return times at ktel-fokidas.gr before you go. A tour removes the timetable problem: one coach, a guide, and the site and museum in the right order. Our getting there guide compares the three.
No. No railway reaches Delphi. The Athens to Thessaloniki line passes Livadeia, more than 40 km short of Delphi, and from there you would need a taxi up the mountain road. The direct public option is the KTEL Fokidas bus from Athens, about three hours. Most people who do not want to drive take a coach tour, which leaves from central Athens and needs no connections.
About two and a half hours by car and about three hours by coach or bus, each way. The tours plan around three hours on the road with a coffee stop in Livadeia. The tour on this page runs about two hours to Livadeia, a 15-minute break, then 45 minutes to Delphi; the return is about three hours. Expect a ten-hour day door to door.
Plan on about three hours for the sanctuary and the museum together. The archaeological site climbs a steep hillside, from the Sacred Way past the Temple of Apollo to the theatre and the stadium at the top, and the museum needs about an hour on its own. The tour on this page gives 105 minutes at the site and an hour in the museum. One recent reviewer had to hurry to reach the stadium before the museum slot, so walk the upper part first if it matters to you.
Yes, if ancient Greece is part of why you came: Delphi is the most complete sanctuary you can reach from Athens in a day. The setting, a ledge under the cliffs of Mount Parnassus above an olive valley, is half of it, and the museum's bronze Charioteer is one of the best surviving Greek bronzes. The cost is about six hours on the road. If you have one free day and care more about landscape than ruins, Meteora is the other candidate; our worth-it guide goes through who should go.
Delphi for ancient history, Meteora for scenery and living monasteries. Delphi is the closer trip, about three hours each way and a ten-hour day. Meteora is further, about four hours each way, and day trips run about 14 hours. Meteora's monasteries have a strict dress code and each closes one weekday a week, more in winter. If you can give it two days, a combined Delphi and Meteora tour does both with a night in Kalambaka. The Delphi or Meteora guide sets them side by side.
The tour on this page starts from $29 per person in current promotion (usually $58) (checked October 2026), but that is the option without entry tickets. Add the Delphi ticket, which covers the site and the museum together: €20 full price and €10 reduced (Hellenic Ministry of Culture, checked October 2026). Several tours sell a with-tickets option that buys it for you. Small-group days cost more, and private cars with a driver cost the most. EU citizens under 25 and non-EU visitors under 18 enter free with ID.
Only on the options that say so. Most Delphi day trips list a lower price without tickets and a higher one with them. Without them you buy the ticket yourself, online for a timed slot at tickets.hh.gr or at the gate, and the tour tells you which hour to book so you enter with the group. With them, the guide handles the queue. Check the option name before you pay: it is the most common surprise in the reviews.
From 1 November to 31 March the site opens 08:30 to 15:30, last entry 15:10; from 1 April it opens 08:00 to 20:00, closing earlier through September and October (08:00 to 18:00 in the second half of October). It closes on 1 January, 25 March, Orthodox Easter Sunday, 1 May and 25 and 26 December (Hellenic Ministry of Culture, checked October 2026). Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month from 1 November to 31 March; check the Ministry's page before you go. The hours and tickets guide has the full list.
For most people, a guided day trip from Athens with the tickets option. The sanctuary makes little sense without someone explaining what stood where, and the guide also solves the three-hour drive and the midday ticket queue. Drive yourself if you want an early start before the coaches, a night in Delphi or Arachova, or time for the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia and the Castalian Spring. A private car with a driver sits in between.
It depends on what you want from the day. Delphi is the classic choice for ancient history. Cape Sounion is the short one, a half-day to the Temple of Poseidon for sunset. Meteora is the most spectacular but the longest, about 14 hours. Mycenae and Epidaurus suit anyone following the myths of the Peloponnese, and Aegina or Hydra suit a day on the water. For a first visit to Greece, Delphi gives the most history per hour on the road.
Shoes with grip, a hat, water and your passport or ID card. The site is a steep climb on polished stone with little shade, and in summer it is hot by late morning. The ID matters for reduced or free tickets, which are checked at the gate. Delphi itself has no dress code; Meteora's monasteries do, so dress for Meteora only if your tour goes there too.
No. We are an independent guide. Entry tickets are sold by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture at the site and at tickets.hh.gr. The tours shown here are sold through GetYourGuide and Viator.
